Written by Sarah Turner

It’s exciting to confirm that Aldi, First MTR South West Railways and Nationwide Crash Repair Centres are in the running for 2019 MRW National Recycling Awards. We’re proud to see the excellent results being achieved by three very different businesses in partnership with SWRnewstar included in the shortlist.

Here’s a little more detail about each of the entries:

First MTR South Western Railway: Recycling Excellence

South Western Railway is committed to reducing it’s overall environmental impact with a high priority place on reducing waste and increasing recycling. Initiatives to achieve this include installing water refill points at stations, introducing coffee grind collections and focusing on segregating resources at depots to recycle as much as possible.

Amelia Woodley, SWR’s Head of Sustainability said: “We have challenging recycling targets to meet and have worked closely with SWRnewstar to explore every opportunity to reduce our waste and maximise our recycling. Our station and depot teams support and dedication have been a key part of our success”.

Nationwide CRC & SWRnewstar: Partnership Excellence

Since working together a range of new recycling services have been implemented, including management of mixed recycling, hard plastic, bumpers, hazardous waste and machinery. During the partnership recycling levels have increased to over 70% and landfill diversion is now over 97%.

Steph Fitzpatrick, Procurement Manager, Nationwide CRC comments: “The team from SWRnewstar have listened to what we want to achieve and tailored the solution so it works for our business; this approach has delivered significant results.”

Aldi & SWRnewstar: Partnership Excellence

As one of the first signatories to Courtauld 2025 and a member of the Champions 12.3 Network Aldi has ambitious commitments to reduce food waste. At the same time they tackling the challenges around plastic and packaging.

Aldi and SWRnewstar have worked together for a number of years to minimise waste. Engagement with the team in each store and distribution centre is key to ongoing recycling success at Aldi, along with finding innovative ways to manage resources sustainably.
